About Allport Partners
In the 1930s, a Harvard psychologist named Gordon Allport made an argument that wasn't obvious at the time: personality isn't one fixed score. It's a distinct, identifiable pattern, a hierarchy of traits unique to each person, and that pattern predicts how someone actually behaves, not just what they say about themselves in an interview.
Allport had good reason to distrust surface impressions. In 1920, as a young graduate, he traveled to Vienna to meet Sigmund Freud, expecting a breakthrough in understanding people. Instead, he watched Freud attempt to psychoanalyze a small boy on a train based on nothing more than an offhand remark the child made about germs. Allport left unconvinced, and increasingly certain that real insight into a person comes from patient, structured observation, not from projecting a theory onto a stranger after five minutes.
Read the pattern, not the performance.
He spent the next four decades building the field of personality psychology around that conviction: that people could be understood rigorously, without reducing them to a single label or a lucky guess. He served as president of the American Psychological Association, wrote foundational work still cited today, and taught a generation of psychologists who went on to shape the field further.
We named this firm after him because that discipline is exactly what executive search is usually missing. Too many searches are built on a polished interview, a flattering reference, and a hope that it works out. Allport Partners is built around the same principle Gordon Allport spent his career proving: the people who will actually perform under real conditions can be identified, if you're structured and rigorous enough to look past the performance and read the pattern underneath.
